All employees, especially faculty, are invited to participate in a self-paced, open online course called “Assessing Learning.” The purpose of this four-week long course is to engage each other on the complex issues surrounding assessing student learning.(If you are an employee who is not teaching classes, you may still be involved in teaching skills to others or driving performance improvement. You, too, can benefit from and contribute to the conversation.)
The course has several brief content items to spark and direct discussion. The main point of the course, however, is for you to identify topics, or "puzzles," to explore and to contribute to solving with your peers.
If you wish to earn a "Certificate of Completion" there are several activities that are required.
The course includes content items on:
Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs)
Activities include extensive use of discussion posts, trying out and reporting back on attempts at using CATs and rubrics, and independently and collaboratively exploring key questions developed by the group.
Be prepared to address the following questions in the Think-Puzzle-Explore course discussion forum:
What do you think you know about assessment?
What questions or puzzles do you have about assessment?
How can we explore and solve these puzzles?
(Note: The "650" hours associated with the class is not the expected work time. Those hours are there in order to get the system to display the approximate end time. You put in as much time as needed to derive the most benefit.)
