Academic Quality Review (AQR): Best Practices in Online Course Design

If you are curious about how online course design is evaluated at Columbus State and the work that is done by your department’s Academic Quality Review (AQR) team, come to this session.  The AQR process has been revised and you are invited to learn all about it. Departments are in the midst of completing AQRs on web and blended courses. AQRs provide faculty with data that may be used show the exemplary work occurring web and blended courses. In this session, we will take a close look the criteria used by AQR reviewers when courses are reviewed. The AQR criteria cover:

  • Course navigation
  • Interaction
  • Assessment
  • Course content
  • Course accessibility

Information will also be provided on how to add captioning to videos and descriptions to images so that courses meet the AQR course accessibility criterion. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to complete a self-assessment using the AQR rubric on one of your own courses.

Blackboard Assessments: Assignments, Tests/Quizzes and Surveys

Are you tired of using so much paper and grading by hand? In this training you will learn how to use Blackboard for assignment submissions and grading. We will show you how to create and deploy tests and quizzes – from simple multiple choice to math formulas  -- in Blackboard. You will also see how to survey your students using Blackboard.

Blackboard Grade Center

Need to brush up on your Grade Center skills? This workshop will introduce you to the main Grade Center features. Participants can also schedule additional one-on-one help with the Faculty Assistance Center following the workshop.

All College faculty are required to use the Grade Center in Blackboard. According to a resolution approved by Academic Council:

In order to increase student success, the OAA Digital Learning Committee recommends that all Columbus State faculty employ the Blackboard Grade Center for students in a manner which allows students to determine, at any point during the term, their current grade in the course (e.g. a running average; running total, weighted or unweighted; other up-to-date benchmark that allows a student to compare their performance to that course’s overall standards of assessment).

Kahoot - Using Mobile Devices in the Classroom for Active and Collaborative Learning

There are many ways to use technology to foster student engagement and learning in the classroom. The free Kahoot program can be an effective tool for reviewing concepts and involving students in active and collaborative learning. This program allows instructors to create their own interactive games, and it encourages students to work together and to use their mobile devices in a constructive way. In this session, Emily Anderson will demonstrate one of the Kahoots she uses in class, followed by a Q&A. Bring your smartphone or laptop so you can play along!

Tracking Student Progress in Blackboard: Retention Center, Performance Dashboard & Course Reports

An overview of how Blackboard’s built in performance and activity trackers can help you quickly identify students who are needing extra attention and those who are doing well. Data provided in Blackboard’s Retention Center can assist in creating Starfish reports in a timely manner. See how Course Reports and the Performance Dashboard can identify most frequently used course areas and students’ access patterns.

Using Weighted Grades in Blackboard

Setting up a weighted grade center can be challenging. This workshop will explain how to use categories in Grade Center to streamline the process as well as other tips to ensure the Grade Center is in sync with the syllabus and reporting accurate grades to the students.
